SUBJECT: Bulldog Blast 1-14-22

January 14, 2022

The Bell PTSA has been advocating for changes in the lunch room and we are excited to share some recent successes.

When students returned to in-person learning this year, they were required to throw all their food in the trash, including uneaten food (e.g., unopened milk, uneaten fruit, unopened packaged foods). There were days where we were seeing more than 100 pieces of uneaten fresh fruit going in the trash (in addition to unopened milk and other food). To remedy this, the Bell PTSA did the following:

  • We worked with King County Green Schools, LWSD, and Sodexo (LWSD's contracted food service provider) to obtain all the necessary approvals needed to relaunch a food donation program at Bell (quite a bit of red tape to get through, but we are finally up and running). During each lunch period, we now set out food-collection bins. We put the food in a fridge and take it to the food bank at the end of the week.

  • We expressed our concerns to our legislators, the school, school district, and to Sodexo. Sodexo recently made a simple change (i.e., no longer REQUIRING students to take certain foods, while still meeting USDA requirements). This change has had a substantial impact on waste levels in our lunch room and across the district. Early estimates indicate that this has resulted in 4K pieces of fruit per day not being wasted (across the district).

  • We re-launched our food composting program, reducing our landfill contribution by approximately 50%.

Sustainability should not take a back seat during a pandemic. We must continue this vital work. Our students need to see sustainability efforts in our schools and in our homes. Our actions need to reflect what we're teaching our kids.

Thank you, Amanda Gibson, for leading our Green Team. And thank you, Kristin Coberly, for stepping into the role of staff Green Team lead earlier this week. We are excited to partner with you.

Before the holiday break, the Bell PTSA hosted a number of classroom parties (for the fall fundraiser and the candy-buy-back). We had an absolute blast with the students!

The students in Mrs. Davies' class wrote thank you letters to the PTSA. They created pizza art on the front of the cards (the pizza art above is from a student) and wrote the most heart-warming thank yous. Thank you, Mrs. Davies' class, for these wonderful letters. These letters remind us of the importance of volunteering and giving back to our school. Thank you to all the volunteers who make it all possible.

Here are just a few samples of the cards we received (names removed for privacy reasons).

Washington State's legislative session began on Monday, January 10. The session adjourns on March 10. Below is an overview of the legislative priorities for WSPTA.

We encourage community members to take action during the legislative session. Here are a few ways to get involved:

  • Subscribe to WSPTA’s Action Network Group - During the Washington State Legislative Sessions, WSPTA will send action alerts to those who have subscribed. These action alerts are quick, easy ways to communicate with your legislators on topics they are actively working on.
  • Reach out to your legislators. Share your story. What are you concerned about and why? What do you want to ask your legislators to do? What work are they doing that you're thankful for?
  • Sign up to testify (students too) - Email:
    • Advocacy Director Lizzy Sebring (ptaadvocacydir@wastatepta.org) or
    • Legislative Consultant Marie Sullivan (legconsultant@wastatepta.org)

Amount Fundraised = $36,796.84!

This Bulldog community is absolutely amazing!  Corporate matches have come in, and we have exceeded our goal of $33,000. THANK YOU to everyone who participated in the campaign, and to those of you who submitted your donation for corporate matching, it truly made all the difference! We are actively planning enrichment opportunities for the students and look forward to bringing those plans to fruition when omicron passes.

As indicated in the email from Dr. Holmen on January 5, only "essential" volunteers are allowed in the building at this time. Given this, if you are currently signed up to volunteer for the art program or anything else inside the building, please do not come for your scheduled shift.

For those of you signed-up to help with outdoor lunch/recess or Popcorn Friday, please DO come to your scheduled volunteer shift since these activities are outdoors. Bell will keep the outdoor dining hall open, given the surge in positive COVID cases. However, this option is contingent on volunteers. Please sign-up to help.

Visit our volunteer page to see all the ways you can help (without being in the building).

We would love to add some pictures of our Bell Bulldogs playing in the snow to this year's yearbook. Please upload your photos to Treering (to the folder called "Snow Days") or email them to yearbook@agbellptsa.org. Please continue to upload photos throughout the year (e.g., classroom parties, spirit days, first day of school, playground time, walking to school, etc.)

And don't forget to order your AG Bell yearbook!

  • Go to: www.treering.com/validate (our school’s passcode: 1015269962362510)

  • $18.80 + tax/shipping to your home (includes two free custom pages!)
