SUBJECT: Bulldog Blast 11-19-21

November 19, 2021

Thank you to the 43 people who have donated gifts to our gift drive! These 43 people have donated over 250 gifts!

We have less than two weeks left to make sure we take care of the 49 Bell kiddos whose families need our support this holiday season (a few more kiddos were just added to the list). With over 400 families in our school, I am confident we can fulfill every gift on these kiddo's wishlists. Please sign-up to donate gifts today.

Wrapped gifts need to be dropped off at Bell's front office by Friday, December 3.

*put a tag on each gift with the child's number from the sign-up.

Here's an update on what's happening with our playground.

A few years ago, Bell had a student in a wheelchair who was unable to access the playground. As a result, the PTSA stepped in and started advocating for an accessible and inclusive playground. Unfortunately, it has taken much longer than anticipated to remedy the issue. The good news is, the district has committed to doing the following by this summer (the initial commitment was a completion date of last summer):

  • Accessibility – The district will make our playground ADA compliant (and ensure that it meets all other LWSD standards, including safety standards).

  • Playground surfacing – The district will be piloting rubber play tiles at Bell. (The current LWSD standard is wood play chips.)

  • Playtoy structure will be updated – The wooden play structure will be replaced.

Student voice is an important part of this project, and they will be involved in the creation of it. The administration team will provide images of different play structures and Bell students will have an opportunity to vote for the play structures they want.

The district also committed to installing an interim climbing dome (some of you may have seen it last week). It was installed on Thursday Nov. 11th, but there was an issue with the installation, so it was removed the next day. We know how frustrating this has been for many of our families. We are hopeful that LWSD will follow through on their commitment and our students will have a completed playground by this summer. We will continue our advocacy work until this project is completed.

We are so thankful for all of the amazing volunteers who make our work possible. We would love to see more of our families getting involved with the school. Here are a few simple and fun ways to give back to our school community:

The City of Kirkland has a Sustainability Master Plan (SMP), which includes reducing emissions. LWSD supports these efforts in a number of ways:

  • School buses have an anti-idling policy
  • All schools in LWSD are anti-idling

As a reminder, please do not leave your cars idling in the car pick-up and drop-off areas

Please turn off your engine when you're not moving. Thank you!

After these recent electrical outages at the school, the administrative team reached out to the PTSA and asked for help with more emergency-prep supplies, specifically battery-operated lights to light up the bathrooms and other dark spaces in the building.

Our emergency-prep chair, Kelsey Hayes, and her adorable helpers have delivered! We got lots of light for the school!

Thank you, Kelsey! And thank you to everyone who donates to the PTSA and supports the work we do.

Visit our e-prep page for more information on the work we do in this area.
